STP Bids for Le Mans Win

Fuel additives giant celebrates racing anniversary with a strong entry in LM P2 with Murphy Prototypes

June 12, 2013, Danbury, Conn.

Forty years after winning the Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500, STP® is campaigning for a win at this year's European endurance classic, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The company's iconic STP® oval will be seen running on the LM P2 Nissan V8-powered Oreca 03 of Irish team, Murphy Prototypes.

The team's regular 2013 European Le Mans Series line-up of hotshot New Zealander, Brendan Hartley, and the greatly experienced endurance sports car driver, Mark Patterson – who placed 2nd in LMP2 at the Petit Le Mans 2011 – will be boosted at La Sarthe with the addition of former Lotus and Hispania F1 driver, Karun Chandhok.

After their Nissan-Oreca ran at the head of the LM P2 field for five hours at last year's 24 Hours of Le Mans, and with Chandhok placing sixth overall, hopes are running high in the Irish team camp, based in Brackley, Oxfordshire.

"We are thrilled to be bringing the legendary STP® name to Le Mans this year and carrying their iconic logo on the car," said team owner of the self-dubbed "Murphy's Men," and former racer and business entrepreneur, Greg Murphy. "Let's hope we can add another win to their already outstanding racing heritage. Our front-running performances at the two ELMS rounds this year at Silverstone and Imola have shown we have the pace and a great driving team with Brendan and Mark, plus the addition of Karun Chandhok to the squad for Le Mans will make the team even greater."

"Our presence at the 24 Hours of Le Mans gives us a great opportunity to revisit STP's magnificent racing heritage, and support our global business," said Jamie Kistner, STP® Brand Director. "We are honored to be a part of Greg Murphy's first-class and hugely enthusiastic team, and wish them all success."
